Dress your Christmas table in style with these super easy cutlery holders. I don’t know about you but each year I have every intention of making a wonderful display for our Christmas table. If you think about it, it really is the one occasion when you can go all out. There are table runners, placemats, napkins and napkin holders, cutlery holders, centerpieces and if you’re so inclined a full table-cloth. Of course the reality of the situation is (for me anyway) these items slowly get pushed down the to-do list as more pressing things need to be finished and they never get done!
This project is not only easy it is quick and only uses 2 fat quarters or half a metre of fabric! Something that even I was able to squeeze into a morning. It sure is a nice feeling knowing I have a little handmade touch to the table, I hope I may have time to make other things but the time is sure passing by quickly!
You will need:
- 2 Fat quarters of fabric (to make 4 cutlery holders)
- Ruler and rotary cutter
- coordinating thread
- Sewing machine
- Pins
- Iron
How to:
- Start by cutting 2 pieces of fabric for each holder. These should measure 5 inches across and 15 inches down
2. Work out which fabric you want for the inside and which one will be the flap. Bear in mind if you’re using directional prints you will need to place it upside down.
3. Place right sides together and pin in place.
4. At the top of where your flap will be mark a 1.5″ gap.
5. Sew all the way around using a 1/4″ seam allowance leaving a 1.5″ gap, making sure to back-stitch at each end to prevent the threads coming undone. Remember the fabric that will become the flap needs to be upside down!
6. Clip the corners, turn right sides out making sure the corners are turned out fully and press well.
7. Top stitch the opening close using a 1/8th” seam allowance
8. Fold the flap over by 5 inches and press and pin in place
9. Sew all the way around the fabric using a 1/8th seam allowance.
10. Repeat the process until all holders are made.
