Liberty Scrap Challenge Sew Along

It is that time of year when the lovely ladies at Ava & Neve host their Liberty Scrap Challenge.   I really enjoyed it last year and knew when I heard they were hosting it again I had to make time to join in.

When it comes to fabric I am a bit of a hoarder and scraps are no exception, especially precious Liberty. I gained a lot of scraps from my Blooming Blossom quilt last year and just can’t bear to throw them away!

I had seen a foundation paper pieced butterfly pattern in Love Patchwork and Quilting Magazine (Issue 72) and had mentally added it to my “To make list” as I have someone in mind to make it for. I think butterflies should almost always be made in Liberty, and failing that Tilda, am I right? So thought it be a perfect start to the scrap challenge.

The pattern is by Susi Bellingham the talented designer behind Tiny Toffee Designs. I decided to copy the templates at the size they had been printed in the magazine rather than enlarging them by 200% as instructed, I only wanted a small butterfly for what I have planned rather 15.5″ x 12.5″ (The pattern is for a tote bag)

I am a tough critic on myself and I am not sure if I am entirely happy with it, nothing to do with the pattern, and I know you can’t go wrong with Liberty and linen but hmm maybe my fabric choices I don’t know, it’s a little off somewhere in my mind. To be honest the larger scale print on the middle part of the wing had been destined for the top, except I cut the wrong fabric for the pieces and seeing as this is a scrap challenge I didn’t feel right starting over with the cutting out!

Now to decide if it should become a needlebook or a pouch. I am looking forward to adding some hand stitching and other little details.

Here is one of the things I made from the challenge last year. I won’t admit that it is still as it is and has not been made to anything yet!

Finally, I had planned on a “June Round-up” post, but alas life got in the way and I never got around to it, it seems a little too late to be doing it now so instead if you are interested your best bet is to head over to my Instagram to see the captions behind the images from this mosaic below plus other makes I got up to last month. I’m hoping there won’t be as much of a gap next time between posts.
